Programs that carry Ubuntu into action.

One essential focus of the Ubuntu Philosophy Foundation is to raise awareness about education reform whose pillar is the centrality of Ubuntu. The aim is to achieve epistemic justice and contribute to a new form of knowledge sharing and production through communal learning.

In this setting, everyone is acknowledged and everyone has a voice. Priority is given to collective discussion, collective knowledge production and collaborative learning, thereby decentering education. This approach recognizes that knowledge comes from multiple centers: everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner. Academic institutions are not the only credible source of knowledge; family, community, culture, personal experience, faith and traditions are also valid sources.

Nit nite moy garabam—“a person is a remedy for other persons”—is the Wolof version of Ubuntu’s best-known maxim, Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu: “a person is a person through other persons.” The Wolof version captures each person’s duty to help heal society through care. Love and empathy are essential to the community’s collective health.

The program encourages the state, civil society and communities to work together toward a healthy society and a common purpose in the spirit of Ubuntu. UPF aims to improve citizens’ health and developmental outcomes across global Africa through community-centered health awareness, public education, advocacy, training, counseling and health promotion. The Foundation also seeks to help medical personnel hold fast to the essential values of their profession: saving lives, caring for the sick and preventing disease.

The Foundation develops servant leaders whose mission is to rebuild communities and help the most vulnerable. Guided by empathy, love and care, they put the needs and interests of the community first. The Foundation develops these compassionate servant leaders through its Ubuntu Leadership Academy.

One of the flagship programs of the Ubuntu Philosophy Foundation is the Ubuntu Philosophy School. Through this initiative, the Foundation trains a variety of stakeholders on the centrality of Ubuntu. Participants come from many walks of life, including civil-society activists, environmentalists, intellectuals and journalists.

The Foundation considers Ubuntu philosophy to be an essential ethos for the global campaign for reparatory justice for people of African heritage and a framework for restoring human dignity. It can serve as a remedy for systemic racism, epistemic injustice and the cultural erasure of the global African community.

The Foundation’s expansive, comprehensive and holistic understanding of reparations includes debt forgiveness, reform of the international system and climate justice. Ubuntu can drive Africa’s psychological self-transformation and psychocultural engineering. It can become a mechanism for individual and collective transfiguration, a fertile ground for self-remedy, Africa’s holistic development and Africa’s redemption.

The Ubuntu Philosophy Foundation is contributing to the development of the Ubuntu Network International. Its acronym, UNI, can be read as “you and I.” The aim is to create a global circle bringing together all who aspire to build a better world—a “Muntuverse” or “Ubuntuverse.” No single organization can transform the world alone; collective effort and strategic collaboration are necessary to build a world of justice and shared prosperity.
